I am Hector, a Software Engineer skilled in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, MongoDB, Angular.js Express.js, React.js, Node.js, Postgresql, and MySQL. As a Software engineer, I build responsive ,user-friendly applications; design databases, and focus on functionality with emphasis on clean design. My military background taught me problem-solving under pressure, teamwork, and adaptability. Skills that I bring to every project. Engineered a custom website for a Professional Hair Care Specialist, serving as a centralized platform that integrates social media, a comprehensive service and pricing menu, client messaging, and a seamless booking and payment system. Designed to provide clients with a streamlined, modern, and user-friendly experience.

Engineered a custom blog-style website for Richardson Tree Company, a professional tree farming business with limited online presence. The platform was designed to share seasonal updates, highlight opening days for Christmas tree sales, and provide customers with directions to various tree lots. Beyond acting as an informational hub, the site is being expanded to include integrated payment processing and order tracking, transforming it into a centralized, customer-focused experience. Due to their inventory and market demand, potential expansion with ServiceNow platform as a backend is being explored.

Developed a custom website for Preferida de Monterrey, an authentic, second-generation Mexican restaurant established in 2002. The owners take pride in their heritage, reflected in both their cuisine and the restaurant’s vibrant atmosphere. The website was designed as a one-stop hub for customers, offering online ordering, real-time food order tracking, and delivery or takeout options directly through the site. Initially, delivery was integrated with Grubhub, but the platform was built to seamlessly transition to a fully in-house ordering and delivery system. To ensure the digital experience reflected the restaurant’s personality, I designed a custom UI/UX inspired by their store’s theme, including an interactive ice cream collage corner to highlight their unique offerings.

Engineered a responsive NY Times replica website with enhanced UI/UX design to improve usability across all devices. Focused on intuitive navigation, readability, and accessibility, while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.

Developed a comprehensive tribute website honoring Puerto Rican military veterans across all eras of service, from World War I through the Global War on Terror. The site serves as a centralized hub with categorized veteran profiles, historical imagery, and informational resources. Custom UI/UX design highlights Puerto Rican heritage while providing an engaging, user-friendly experience.

Future updates will include additional veterans of each era and music inspired by the culture of Puerto Rico.

This cybersecurity lab provides a hands-on environment for mastering both offensive and defensive security skills. The setup features a variety of operating systems and devices, including Kali Linux for penetration testing and Parrot OS for defense, along with a Windows server and mobile devices to simulate a realistic network. Segmented networks for IoT, guest access, and the main lab ensure a safe and controlled space for conducting tests. This lab's primary purpose is to allow for practical exercises in network scanning, vulnerability assessments, and incident response, preparing individuals for real-world cybersecurity challenges.

Future updates will include creating a SOC environment that include IDS/IPS (pfSense or OPNsense), and a SIEM Platform like Splunk.

Engineered an interactive, browser-based Halloween-themed slot machine game featuring dynamic animations, themed sound effects, and responsive design for seamless play across devices. The project emphasizes user engagement through visually appealing graphics and intuitive gameplay mechanics, providing a fun and immersive experience. Future updates will include updated gaming dynamics and the ability to choose your prefered theme ie. Christmas, New Years, etc.

About

I’m Hector Melendez, a military veteran and former Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Operations Manager with over a decade of experience leading teams in high-pressure, complex, and austere environments. While deployed to Afghanistan, I conducted joint operations with Polish Special Forces, NATO allies, and Afghan commandos, developing my ability to solve high-stakes problems, think strategically, and remain calm under pressure.

Software Engineering captured me because it mirrors the challenges I thrived on in EOD: define the end goal, analyze and mitigate risks, and develop dynamic solutions tailored to each scenario. Along this journey, I’ve completed ethical hacking training with EC-Council, earned CompTIA Security+, and built production websites for business leaders. I’m currently developing a Puerto Rican veterans archive spanning WWI to the GWOT era.

I bring mission-focused discipline, leadership, and hands-on training experience to software engineering. I thrive on solving complex problems, mentoring others, and delivering practical solutions.
